1935. Britain. Briony is a 13 years old girl from a wealthy family and she has a great imagination. Her sister, Cecilia falls in love with Robbie, a servant's son. Briany has a crush on him. Robbie writes some drafts of letters to Cecilia, including one which is erotically charged. He doesn't intend to send it and sets it aside. Robbie asks Briony to deliver his letter to Cecilia, only to later realise that he has given her the "wrong" draft. Briony secretly reads the letter and is both disgusted and jealous.
That evening, Cecilia and Robbie meet in the library, where they make love and confess their love for one another. Briony watches through the partially open door. At dinner it is revealed that the twin cousins have run away. Briony goes alone into the woods looking for them and she sees a man running away.Then, she finds her young cousin Lola, alone in the dark. Someone raped her. Lola claims that she does not know the identity of her attacker, but Briony tells everyone, including the police, that she saw Robbie commit the act. Everyone believes her story except for Cecilia. Robbie is arrested and sent to prison. And here start the "atonement" of both Briony and Robbie...
I cry everytime I watch it.Uff, I'm too romantic, I know.
